Shipping
We were recently appointed to investigate the darkening of soybean cargo observed during discharge operations in Cilegon, Indonesia. Following our inspection and review of the vessel’s voyage conditions, we identified that the affected hold experienced raised temperatures caused by the heating of fuel oil in the double-bottom tank beneath the cargo. The rise in temperature led to moisture migration and condensation, increasing the cargo’s moisture content and resulting in localized darkening. To minimize loss and preserve cargo quality, we worked closely with the consignee to segregate sound cargo from the affected parcels. This case demonstrates our ability to quickly identify causation, provide practical mitigation measures, and support all stakeholders in achieving a proper cargo discharge process.

Marine Survey
We conducted a detailed investigation into the darkening of soybean cargo during discharge operations in Cilegon, Indonesia. By assessing vessel conditions and identifying the root cause of the temperature rise, we ensured proper handling and preservation of the cargo’s quality.
We found that heat from the fuel-oil tank caused moisture migration and cargo darkening.
We assessed the extent of moisture buildup affecting the soybeans.
We helped separate sound cargo from affected parcels to minimize loss.
